Suicide Awareness and Prevention

Your life is worth living.

Peoria Public Schools believes that suicide prevention requires a comprehensive approach including:

  • Creating healthy school environments by teaching and supporting social-emotional learning competencies (self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

  • Integrating support for student social-emotional competencies throughout each school day.

  • Promoting connectedness and emotional well-being, amongst our students and staff.

  • Identifying students who may be at risk for suicide and assisting them in getting them connected to the resources they need.

  • Working with families, community agencies, and related medical services to wraparound the student.

  • Being prepared to respond in case a suicide death occurs.

To further our role within this comprehensive approach to suicide prevention:

  • Our district staff follows behavior threat assessment procedures.

  • Every school building annually updates its crisis management response plans. These plans are held at each school building and shared with staff so that they internally have an outline of specific procedures on who should respond, when to respond, and how to respond.

  • We partner with Hult Center for Healthy Living to provide suicide awareness, prevention, and response training to our district’s mental health professionals and to provide mental health and suicide prevention resources to our students.
