Little Free Libraries

Little Free Libraries are located at all Peoria Public School buildings with grades kindergarten through fourth grade, Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center (VHECEC) and St. Paul Baptist Church in Peoria.

Little Free Libraries are stocked with all types of children's books: fiction and nonfiction, picture books, early readers, chapter books and young adult books. Little Free Libraries encourage students to take a book home, read it, share it and return it.  

Peoria Public Schools Little Free Libraries were installed in May 2019 by the Align Peoria Literacy Committee, the Junior League of Peoria and the Peoria Public Schools Foundation. 

Peoria Public School Little Free Libraries were constructed by the Woodruff Career and Technical Center (WCTC) Construction Trades students. Thank you!

 

Educators know:

  • Children with access to books at home spend more time reading.

  • Children who read at least 20 minutes each day are more likely to read at or above grade level by the end of the third grade.

  • Children who read at grade level by the end of third grade are more likely to graduate from high school on time.

  • Higher reading and math ability at age 7 results in higher income, better housing and better jobs in adulthood!

  • Readers report being less stressed, have higher levels of self-esteem and are better prepared to cope with challenges.

The Book Rack, in Oak Cliff Center at Lake and Knoxville in Peoria accepts donations of new and gently-used childrens books for Peoria Public School Little Free Libraries.  Financial donations to purchase books may be sent to:
