Congrats to our boys track team for defeating Peoria Manual. Melvin won the 100 and 200 meter dash with new blazing seasonal bears. Malik won the long jump with a state qualifying jump. Meanwhile, Cam hit a HUGE LEAP of 6-6 to win high jump. Jayleon won the 3200, while Luis won the 800. Daveon hit a PR in long and high jump while winning the 110 hurdles. Charles won the 300 meter hurdles while Kenzy won the discus. Joelle won the triple jump with a lifetime new best jump too. It was an amazing day for our athletes. The break might be over, but the sports continued for Peoria High School. The boys’ track team braved some cold weather and competed at Pontiac last Wednesday and then followed that up with a win over Manual. During that time, Malik won the long jump with a leap of 22-foot-5 (ranked 5th in the state), while Cam won a pair of high jump events, leaping 6-foot-6, which puts him ranked third in the state of Illinois. Johnson also high jumped for the first time and cleared a 6-foot-2. Melvin took a pair of wins in the 100-meter dash, while Joelle took a win in the triple jump with a career best 41 feet. Jayleon ran a career best in the 3200-meter and 1600-meter runs. The softball team dropped a 20-2 contest to Champaign Centennial and a 17-0 loss to Champaign Central to fall to 1-2 on the season. The baseball team dropped two games to Peoria Richwoods to fall to 0-4 on the season. Meanwhile, the girls’ soccer team began their season last week but fell to Champaign Centennial.

Can we get a happy birthday for Coach Bates? Coach dedicates four days a week in the weight room all year round. He is a dedicated coach for Peoria High, but he gives that same amount of energy to his wife, children, and the kids at the Friendship House. Coach, we are so grateful for you. Over the weekend, the PHS women’s track team concluded its indoor season at the Bloomington Invitational hosted at the Shirk Center. Sophomore Jamiyah J. led the team with a first-place finish in the JV triple jump with a leap of 9.93 meters. The JV 4×200-meter relay of Cha’Miyah W., Ramyah M., Khanise N., and Shanavia M. took third place with a time of 1:53.28. In the 60-meter hurdles, Shanavia (11.64) and Quinaiya R. went 12th and 13th respectively in the JV race. Quinaiya went 4.34 meters to take seventh in the JV long jump, while Cha'Miyah was 9th with a jump of 4.20 meters. Meanwhile, Nahveah A. Was 15th overall in the JV shot put.

The Peoria High School Band participated in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade! The band even included their favorite leprechaun with a pot his pot of gold!

Congratulations to our boys track and field team for placing fifth at the Big 12 Conference indoor championships. Malik Johnson was the champion in the long jump and triple jump. Melvin Jenkins was 0.01 second from winning the 60 meter dash and finished second. Cam Gunn finished second in the high jump while Jaylen Rayford finished third. Jamir Griffin finished fifth in the fresh/soph high jump. Titus Wyatt medaled for fourth in the fresh/soph 60, while the 4x200 relay of Frank Flowers, Julian Lowe, Damarion Zapata, and Melvin Jenkins took fifth. Finally, the 4x800 relay of Jayleon Williams, Nick Jones, Kenny Armstrong, and Tarell Jackson took fifth. Congrats on an outstanding first meet of the season!

Having numbers certainly helps. The boys’ track team has nearly doubled in size, going from about 35 participants to almost 60 track and field athletes. With a healthy dose of experience returning, the Peoria High boys’ track and field team has strived to get 1% better each and every day.
