Kherat opening remarks

In the heart of Central Illinois, an exciting transformation is underway. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the business community, local educators, and organizations like the College Board, the region is redefining what it means to prepare young people for success in both college and career. The recent Heart of Illinois Education & Workforce Breakfast, held on March 12, 2026, showcased the momentum behind this movement and left attendees inspired about the future of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and the talent pipeline in our community.

A Vision for Career-Connected Learning

The event began with a shared vision: clearing the path for all students to own their future. Central to this vision is the expansion of Advanced Placement (AP) Career Kickstart courses, which integrate seamlessly with CTE programs. These innovative courses allow students to earn college credit and industry-recognized credentials while preparing for high-demand careers. By aligning education with business needs, students in Central Illinois are not just learning theory—they’re acquiring the skills and certifications they need to succeed after graduation.

As highlighted by Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat, Superintendent of Peoria Public Schools and Illinois’ 2025 Superintendent of the Year, this approach is fundamentally transforming education in the region. "We’re not just teaching classes—we’re building futures," she said. This sentiment was echoed throughout the event as educators and business leaders emphasized the power of partnerships and the shared commitment to preparing students for the real world.

Success Stories to Inspire

The Breakfast wasn’t just about ideas; it was about action and results. Attendees heard inspiring stories of local students who have thrived thanks to CTE programs and community support. Take Tatiana, for example, a graduate of Manual High School who discovered her passion for construction through a work-based learning class. After visiting a local electrician training center, she found her calling and is now a full-time steamfitter at Pipco Companies.

Another standout story is that of Aurelia Gomez, a graduate of the manufacturing program at Manual High School. After earning certifications and interning at Caterpillar, Aurelia attended Illinois Central College and later transferred to Bradley University. Today, she’s an engineer at Caterpillar, proving that the combination of education, hands-on experience, and mentorship can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

These stories are not just exceptions—they’re becoming the norm. Last year alone, students at Woodruff Career and Technical Center earned over 800 industry-recognized certifications, opening doors to immediate job opportunities and long-term careers.

The Role of Business and Community Partnerships

The success of our district's CTE programs owes much to the unwavering support of the local business community. Companies like Caterpillar have provided not only funding but also hands-on opportunities that bridge the gap between education and real-world experience. For example, Caterpillar’s $6 million investment in a new Fab Lab at Woodruff Career and Technical Center will give students access to cutting-edge technology, such as 3D printers and advanced manufacturing tools. These partnerships are helping students gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed in high-demand industries—especially developing the soft skills—like communication, collaboration, and problem-solving—that employers say are essential for workplace success.

Beyond financial contributions, local businesses have opened their doors for internships, mentorships, and other forms of career-connected learning, ensuring that students graduate with both knowledge and practical experience.

Greg Walker, Senior Vice President of State and District Partnerships at the College Board, emphasized the importance of these collaborations. "It’s not college or career—it’s college and career," he said. By bringing together educators, employers, and community leaders, Central Illinois is creating a sustainable system that benefits everyone.

If your company is ready to make an impact and help shape the future workforce, now is the time to act. Local Peoria businesses are encouraged to reach out to the Career Center at Woodruff Career and Technical Center to explore hosting an internship opportunity this year or next fall. Your involvement can make a profound difference in shaping the lives of students while ensuring a steady talent pipeline for our regional economy. Together, we can continue building a brighter future for Peoria!

Challenges and Opportunities

While the region has made great strides, challenges remain. As discussed during the keynote on regional workforce trends, industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics face growing workforce shortages due to retirements and population declines. Additionally, there’s a need to better align CTE programs with industry demands and to attract more people to the region to fill critical roles.

However, these challenges are also opportunities. The integration of new technologies, such as robotics and AI, is reshaping industries and creating demand for skilled workers. Programs like AP Cybersecurity and AP Business with Personal Finance are equipping students with the skills needed to succeed in these emerging fields.

A Hopeful Future

The Heart of Illinois Education & Workforce Breakfast served as a powerful reminder that no one organization or sector can tackle these challenges alone. It takes a village. Educators, employers, and community leaders must continue to work together to create pathways that prepare students for success while strengthening the regional economy.

As Dr. Kherat reminded attendees, "Education should not force every student down the same path. For some, that path leads to college; for others, it’s apprenticeships or careers. But every path matters."

With initiatives like AP Career Kickstart, expanded CTE programs, and strong community partnerships, Central Illinois is proving that it has what it takes to build a brighter future—one student, one pathway, and one success story at a time.

For educators, employers, and community members looking to get involved, there are many ways to make a difference. From hosting internships to serving on advisory councils or endorsing programs, your support is critical to sustaining this momentum. Together, we can ensure that every student in Central Illinois has the opportunity to thrive—and that our community continues to grow and prosper.

The future is bright for Central Illinois, and the best is yet to come.
