Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center, in collaboration with the Central Illinois Monarch Task Force, hosted its inaugural Monarch Festival on Wednesday, September 20th, to mark a remarkable initiative – the raising and release of over 600 monarch butterflies.
Students, aged three to five, have embraced their roles as citizen scientists, exploring the Monarch butterfly's life cycle, care, and its vital role in pollinating plants. They've also discovered the Monarchs' migration from Mexico to Canada, with central Illinois as a key resting point. Instructors used interactive games, manipulatives, and literature aligned with Illinois Early Learning Standards, ensuring inclusivity for all developmental levels.
During the event, families celebrated the students' discoveries through engaging math, science, and art activities. Special guests, including the Very Hungry Caterpillar, were present, along with an up-close experience with the butterflies. The festival is made possible by a Peoria Public Schools Foundation Classroom grant.
