Sarah Polnitz, Principal of Whittier Primary, has been named to WTVP’s 40 Under Forty Class of 2025, recognizing young leaders making a difference in central Illinois.

Polnitz’s journey into education was unexpected. Originally pursuing Health Science and Biology with plans for medical school, she took a Pre-K2 teaching job that changed everything. Encouraged by a mentor, she returned to school for her education degree and began teaching Kindergarten at Pleasant Valley Primary, where she helped write the Kindergarten curriculum.

Drawn to Whittier Primary’s culture, diversity, and strong sense of community, Polnitz joined the 2nd-grade team in 2020 and completed her Master’s in Educational Leadership that December. When the principal retired suddenly, she stepped into the role of principal at just 29. Since then, her leadership has focused on “cultivating belonging, uplifting one another, and believing wholeheartedly in every child.”

Mentors and key experiences shaped her path, including visits to the Ron Clark Academy and guidance from leaders like Nermeen Farghaly and Dr. Nicole Couri Malson. Polnitz says this honor is “a reminder that my work matters and that I am contributing to shaping the future of education in central Illinois.”

Looking ahead, she is excited to begin her doctoral journey in Educational Leadership, further strengthen Whittier’s school culture, support teacher growth, and continue creating engaging, high-expectation learning experiences for students.

“We rise by uplifting others,” Polnitz said. “I’m grateful for my mentors, colleagues, and community who inspire me to grow and lead every day.”
