Peoria Public Schools is beaming with pride after three of our incredible students participated in the Amazing Shake Global Competition at the world-famous Ron Clark Academy (RCA) in Atlanta, Georgia. Accompanied by Executive Director of Schools, Dr. Couri-Malson, these students had the opportunity to experience a whirlwind weekend of high-energy challenges, global networking, and personal growth—all in an electrifying environment designed to push participants out of their comfort zones.
This year’s competition carried a special theme: Survivor. Ron Clark, a former contestant on Survivor: Season 38 in 2019, infused the event with the adventurous spirit of the show. The students were even treated to a surprise guest appearance by Cirie Fields, a celebrated Survivor legend, and Savannah Louie, the winner of Survivor: Season 49. Their stories of resilience and determination added an extra layer of inspiration for the young competitors.
The Amazing Shake is more than just a competition — it’s a transformative experience. It focuses on developing essential soft skills such as communication, confidence, and collaboration—preparing students for life far beyond the classroom. This year, the global event welcomed 519 participants from across the globe, including students from Honduras, Canada, Hawaii, making it a truly international affair.
From the moment they arrived, the students were immersed in the electrifying culture of RCA. They were greeted by Ron Clark — the founder of The Ron Clark Academy — who greeted them with energetic feedback as they practiced their greetings. They also bonded with other participants during the high-energy events. At one point, the students experienced the iconic RCA tradition of becoming “slide certified.” Sliding down the academy’s famous indoor slide isn’t just a fun activity — it’s a symbolic gesture encouraging students and educators to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new ways of thinking about education.
The Survivor theme carried through the challenges, and students had the opportunity to meet peers from all over the world. Whether they were competing in teams during problem-solving activities or cheering each other on in the high-energy gauntlet, our students embraced the spirit of camaraderie and growth.
One of our students, Deangela, from Mark Bills Middle School, had a standout moment responding to a question from THE Ron Clark that left her support team in awe of her courage. During a large group session packed to the brim with standing-room-only attendees — participants, chaperones, and educators alike — Deangela courageously raised her hand, took the microphone, and delivered a confident, eloquent 30-second response that captivated the room. Her poise and self-assurance in such an overwhelming setting were a testament to the strength and potential of our young leaders when we give them a chance to speak.
While our students didn’t advance to the top 50, they walked away with new friendships, invaluable lessons, and memories to last a lifetime. Mallorie (Northmoor), Deangela (Mark Bills) and Delilah (Rolling Acres) enjoyed a celebratory dance party complete with glowsticks, games, and outdoor grilling — a chance to relax, bond, and soak in the magic of the event.
Dr. Couri-Malson summed it up perfectly: “The Amazing Shake is one of the coolest things we’ve ever done. It’s so much bigger than a competition — it’s about educating the whole child and preparing them with skills for life.”
This incredible experience with lasting impact was made possible by the unwavering support of families, teachers, and our community. Thanks to their efforts, our three students were able to represent Peoria Public Schools on a global stage, and their participation will undoubtedly inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
We’re already excited for next year’s competition and hope to see even more students from our district taking part in this incredible experience. To get a glimpse of the excitement and energy from this year’s event, check out the Ron Clark Academy's event highlight reel here.
