Some of the most important people in education work quietly behind the scenes every day. Special education coordinators are among them, supporting students, families, and staff in ways that often go unnoticed but make a lasting impact.
Their role goes far beyond paperwork and meetings. They help coordinate services, support teachers, work closely with families, advocate for students, and ensure every child has access to the tools and opportunities they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Recently, Marci Hayes was recognized for that work, receiving an Annie Award from the Chasing Hope Foundation for her dedication to students and families throughout the community.
But according to Hayes, recognition belongs to the entire team.
“Special education is never the work of one person. It takes an entire team committed to supporting students every step of the way.”
Special education coordinators serve as problem-solvers, advocates, and trusted partners for families. They also provide guidance and support for teachers while helping schools create welcoming environments where all students can thrive.
The work requires patience, empathy, and collaboration.
Hayes’ impact can be felt across the district, even if she prefers to keep the focus on others.
“The strongest support systems are built when teams work together to ensure every student feels seen, valued, and supported.”
Her leadership reflects what education is truly about: compassion, teamwork, and doing what is best for students. Whether helping families, supporting staff, or advocating for student success, Hayes continues to remind those around her that meaningful progress happens when people work together with a shared purpose.
In education, recognition often goes to the moments people can easily see, such as graduations, awards, performances, and achievements. These moments are only possible because of the teams working behind the scenes long before the celebration begins.
“Some of the most important work in education happens quietly, through teamwork, advocacy, and a commitment to helping every child succeed.”
The recognition from the Chasing Hope Foundation is well deserved, not only because of Marci Hayes’ dedication, but because of the culture of support she helps build every day with her team within Peoria Public Schools.
