Last weekend, the Scripps Howard Illinois Regional Spelling Bee showcased the brilliance, determination, and hard work of 60 amazing young spellers from across our region. Sixteen of our dedicated PPS students stepped up to the plate to conquer challenging words like macchiato, fisticuffs, insouciance, moiety, and adscititious, demonstrating their impressive preparation and love for language.
The competition’s thrilling conclusion came down to the winning word: ogival—a term used to describe something shaped like a pointed arch or curve, often seen in Gothic architecture. For example: "The cathedral’s ogival arches added an air of grandeur to its timeless design."
We want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Gillian E. (Reservoir Gifted Academy), Asher S. (CT Vivian), and Ari B. (Kellar Primary) for their incredible performances. Out of 60 competitors, they soared to the Top 20, and Gillian went even further, making it to the Top 4 finalists! Her determination and poise were truly inspiring, and she represented our community with pride.
A special round of applause goes to our regional spelling champion, Isa Z. from Peoria Academy, who outlasted the competition and earned a spot at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Isa will represent our region with a $2,000 prize in hand and a chance to compete for the $52,000 grand prize. Let’s all, in the spirit of good spelling sportsmanship, cheer on Isa as he prepares for nationals. Go get that trophy, Isa—we’re all rooting for you!
We also want to recognize the incredible support system behind these talented students. To the classmates, parents, and teachers who helped them prepare—thank you for your encouragement, dedication, and hard work. You played a vital role in their success and helped make this event a true celebration of learning and community.
