This month Peoria Public Schools introduces Saturday University, a new learning opportunity for third and sixth grade students to sharpen and strengthen math and reading skills. Beginning October 21 and meeting from 9 a.m. to noon on 20 Saturday mornings through April 14, Saturday University will be open to 100 students. The program will be held at Glen Oak Community Learning Center and bus transportation will be provided. Bradley University students and Caterpillar Inc. volunteers will work with students, as well as certified teachers and teacher aides. On Tuesday May 16, 20 4th grade students from Whittier Primary, Franklin Primary and Peoria High School students for a retreat at Bradley Park. During the retreat the students shared about their plans for the future, how to achieve their goals, and played team building games. The event was a success, and the schools look forward to making this a annual event.
During the week of 5/15-5/19, Whittier will celebrate the AR winners from each grade level with the privilege of being Principal for the day. Each student takes one day of the week, and mandates no homework, distributes 'Dream Dollars', and has the freedom to travel throughout the building and each classroom. The students do a great job, and have a lot of fun.
On Wednesday May 10, the Forest Park Nature Center visited Whittier Primary School's 1st Grade students. The presenters discussed the different type of habitats and species that live in the environment.
On Monday, May 1st, over 575 individuals from 91 Central Illinois Schools convened to celebrate the success and achievement of area students in grades K-12 in Washington, Illinois with a Recognition Breakfast and Banquet. This unique and remarkable event was sponsored by the Central Illinois Valley Region of the Illinois Principal’s Association and featured WEEK News 25 Anchor, Caitlyn Knute as the Keynote Speaker. This event is put on each year and has grown to include school districts from Fulton, Mason, Woodford, Tazewell and Peoria Counties. This event is one-of-a-kind as local area educational leaders work together to collaboratively recognize our best and brightest students. Whittier students who were recognized at this event were Brenna Huff and Lydia Lynn. Congratulations to these students for their remarkable accomplishments.
On Wednesday May 3, Whittier Primary hosted Family Night at Chuck E. Cheese restaurant. The event was organized by Mrs. Pelphrey and the 1st grade team to raise money for Whittier. Chuck E. Cheese's mascot came to school during the day visiting the students during lunch to promote the event. Whittier had a great turnout at the event and look forward to future events with Chuck E. Cheese in the future.
On April 18 Peoria Medical Society Alliance officially became an Adopt-A-School. The alliance has provided support to Whittier over the years with volunteers and student supplies. The official partnership will see an increased collaboration between the two groups.
