Application Process for Incoming Students Has Begun

Washington Gifted Middle School (Grades 5-8)

The program at Washington Middle School is a full-time academic program designed to support academically gifted students. It offers students an opportunity to engage in learning activities at an accelerated pace, depth, and complexity of on grade-level and above-grade-level curriculum.

Qualifying students will have consistently demonstrated exceptional abilities in both mathematics and reading as measured by the Northwest Evaluation Association’s Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) which is a nationally normed assessment. In addition to the NWEA MAP Assessment, qualifying students will have performed Above Average on the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) and at the Meets or Exceeds level on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC Assessment).

The Application and Screening Process for 2019-2020 will begin on Monday, October 22:

All Peoria Public Schools 4th graders will be given the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) sometime between October 22 and November 20, 2018.

A list of students who have consistently demonstrated exceptional abilities in both mathematics and reading will be generated for each school using the following measures:

1) The Northwest Evaluation Association’s Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP)

2) The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

3) Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC Assessment)

Below is the process for students currently attending Peoria Public Schools:

Students will be placed on the list to be considered for Washington Gifted School using the following criteria:

OPTION 1 – Student has a College and Career Readiness (CCR) percentile ranking average for the last four NWEA test administrations in reading (70%) and math (76%).

OPTION 2 - Student earned an 89% or higher percentile ranking on the CogAT

OPTION 3 – Student must have earned a 4 (Met Standards) or 5 (Exceeds Standards) on the 2017 PARCC assessment in both reading and mathematics.

A letter will be mailed to the parent/guardian of all students who are on the list to be considered.  The letters should arrive sometime in December 2018. This letter does not guarentee admission to Washington Gifted School.  It merely communicates to parents that the student is under consideration.

If you strongly feel your student should be considered for admittance into Washington Gifted Middle School and he/she was not referred for consideration, parents can submit a referral: PARENT REFERRAL FORM

ALL PARENT REFERRALS FOR CURRENT PEORIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS STUDENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE DISTRICT GIFTED SELECTION COMMITTEE BY FRIDAY, January 11, 2019.
