Peoria Public Schools is seeking volunteer mentors to participate in Making the Grade Conferencing events, February 19 - 21 and April 29 - May 1. Making the Grade Conferencing pairs community volunteers with 6th and 7th grade students to meet one-on-one to review their latest progress report. Making the Grade Conferencing is a great way for members of the community to reach out to our young people to inspire them to pursue academic excellence.
How does Making the Grade Conferencing work?
During the event, volunteer mentors visit their assigned school to meet with students in one-one-one sessions. During a 10 - 15 minute session with each student, volunteers review the student's grades and discuss topics such as homework, absenteeism, referrals, the student's school experience and planning for the future.
Why is Making the Grade Conferencing Important?
One-on-one conferencing helps students reflect on their academic performance and motivates them for the rest of the semester. This personalized attention helps students get extra help, if needed. Past conferences have helped identify students who may need enrichment, tutoring, social support or other types of assistance to help them reach their potential. Our goal is to make sure that no student is left behind in his or her schoolwork or "falls through the cracks" of Peoria's support systems.
Please consider helping!
Volunteers participate in a short training session and then typically meet with 8 - 12 students in a two-hour conference event. Making the Grade Conferencing events take place during normal school hours.
Training 8L30 - 8:55 a.m.
Conference Session 9 - 11:15 a.m.
