Hello! I am one of the eighth grade teachers at WGMS. I teach 8th grade Spanish as well as English classes. Each class is a 40 minute class period. Below is an overview of what we do each year.

Spanish
Students will receive a textbook, Que Chévere, that will be used as a reference as needed. Instruction will be mostly in Spanish, with some English to clarify and for grammar concepts.

All students need a Spanish dictionary.

The primary focus is whole language. Students should be listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. Books we read are meant for language learning with numerous cognates, repetition and an expansive glossary in the back of the book.

Themes that will be used throughout the year include sports, clothing, hobbies, chores, and foods.

Some grammar will be introduced separately, then used in whole language. Students will receive a flipbook that includes the following concepts: gender and number of nouns, conjugating regular verbs, some of the irregulars, stem changing, and commands, possessive adjectives and object pronouns. We typically end the year with preterit and imperfect past tenses.

Extra resources are frequently posted on Teams as needed.

Additional topics may be added as needed.

English
Our textbook is Into Literature. We will work on the Moving Towards Freedom Unit, Edgar Allan Poe's work and The Diary of Anne Frank.

We have some cross-curricular projects students will work on this year; a research paper on the Civil War, and the decades project.

All students will write a story for Young Authors, which will be due in January.

Students will also read some novels throughout the semester, including Spoon River Anthology, Fahrenheit 451, Hamlet, and, if time allows, a choice selection at the end of the year.

In the spring, students will participate in a debate.

Students are given IXL assignments each week focusing on skills related to current classwork. There are generally two assigned each week. Students should reach at least a 95% Smart Score.

Additional resources students will use are Latin and Greek roots books and Philosophy for Teens.
