Hello, my name is Mark Jirousek and I am the Band Director at Washington Gifted School. I have been teaching for 29 years and this is my eigth year at Washington.  If my face looks familiar to you,  I completed a successful 18 year tenure at Richwoods High School as director of the Concert and Marching Bands and am thrilled having the opportunity to continue the well-established tradition of musical excellence at Washington.  I am now teaching some of the children of students I taught at RHS.  My work is never done!  Almost half of the students enrolled at Washington are involved in Band.  BAND IS THE PLACE TO BE!

One of my on-going professional growth goals is increased parent communication through the use of this website.  While teaching is not new to me,  my webpage design is still developing. This site will evolve over time and I hope you will check back often to see the latest additions and revisions. Just see the menu to the left for "UPDATES" for the most recent announcements.   As always, please feel free to email me any time.

    Band Objectives

To increase the students musical knowledge and skill on their respective instruments. To enhance their understanding of the importance of music in our culture. To perform at various school & community functions. To better understand the concepts of teamwork, discipline, responsibility and community.  TO HAVE FUN DOING SO!

Office hours at 10:15-11:00 am are now on MS Teams.  If you did not get an invite for your designated day, PLEASE email me immediately.

PLEASE refer to the "UPDATES" link at left daily.  CHECK OUT SIGHTREADING FACTORY!  It's brand new for our school!  Band students are expected to redeem their student code for this and utilize the site.  Also, during e-learning, band students are encouraged to practice their instrument and/or listen to the music reference recordings.  Even just LISTENING to the pieces can really accomplish a LOT.  This can be done in a reasonable period of time each day on which the student would normally have band class as part of the learning anytime-anywhere initiative.

Vocal Music and Band students are encouraged to utilize and explore the music links section at left for practice in rhythm, note and ear training.
