Hello! I am one of the Spanish teachers at Washington. I am excited to see the new students and continue working with returning students. Spanish classes for all grade levels are divided between the other Spanish teacher and myself. I am teaching all sixth and eighth grade students, as well as 701 and 702. I also have the pleasure of getting to know 601 as my homeroom this year!
6th grade will be using Avancemos 1. We will begin where they left off last year and progress through the book. The goal is to complete most of the book this school year. While much of the lessons will be from the textbook, I will substitute with additional resources as needed. The vocabulary lists at the end of each unit will be the focus for each lesson. An account with the online textbook will be set up for each student. This can be seen at <my.hrw.com>. There are several valuable links to help students with the vocabulary and concepts specific to what they are learning in class. In addition, other resources are listed on my website. While some of the vocabulary may differ, any practice students can get is beneficial when learning a new language.
7th grade will begin the year completing Avancemos 1b. We will do review of previously learned material as needed. We plan to finish the rest of the book in the first quarter. Students will keep the textbook throughout the year to use as a resource as needed. We will then be using supplemental martials, including a variety of thematic units and reading in Spanish. Much of what is done will be based on the areas students have not yet mastered. More projects can be expected for 7th grade.
8th grade has completed the textbook. We will be using supplemental material this year. There will be several projects, many based on thematic units, as well as reading and writing in Spanish. Much of what is done will be based on the areas students have not yet mastered. Whole language is the focus for 8th grade.
Here is a little basic information about my classroom:
I do not give much homework in my classes. I try to keep the work in the classroom. However, students should spend 5-15 minutes studying what was covered each day. The amount necessary depends on the student. For assigned work, if only a few students from a class didn't finish their work during the class time given, the assignment will not be on the website. However, they are told to write the assignment in their planner before leaving the room. If an assignment is given as a homework assignment I do my best to post it to the grade level. Sometimes something comes up and it doesn't get posted. If this happens, it should still be in your student's planner and I do apologize for not getting it posted. Whenever an assignment is given, we stop what we are doing and take time for the students to write it in. Also, students should not have more than 30 minutes of homework for Spanish. If this happens, please let me know so we can discuss what is happening and determine if extra help is needed. I do work with students before school, if needed.
Please check planners. If a student doesn't turn in work, they are asked to bring me their planner to initial. The planner is the best source of information. Also, ask if they had their planner with them in each class if assignments are not written in or missing.
