What is a school safety zone?

Image result for illinois school safety driving zone

A School Safety Zone is a designated stretch of roadway which includes school safety zone signs and a variety of measures such as watch your speed signs, improved pavement makings, flashing beacons, among other possible improvements.

I recently have had several complaints of cars continuing to drive through the crosswalks while the lights are flashing.  Please be cognizant of walkers crossing the road.  It is very imperative to drive slowly and stop when needed for the safety of our students and families.  This also holds true when driving on our blacktop for arrival and dismissal.

    Walkers
If your child is a walker, these are the steps that Mrs. Olson follows:

    • All walkers will be called to the gym at 3:35 and walked across the street by 3:40
    • Mrs. Olson uses a check off list for roll call to line up students.
    • Students are walked across the street using the flashing lights and the handheld stop sign. (The pick-up place for walkers is across the street from Kellar on Mt. Hawley by the gate opening/crosswalk.)
    • When a child's pickup person is there, they will walk in front of the parking blocks to cars or to their parent/guardian on the sidewalk.
    • Each child must say good-bye to Mrs. Olson so she knows they are leaving and safe.
    • Mrs. Olson stays across the street until ALL children are safely picked up.
    • If any students are still not picked up, she will walk them to the office and contact  parents to find out a solution.

Pick Up Procedure for Inclement Weather

    • Parents please park on blacktop or main parking lot.  Exit vehicles and proceed to Entrance #4, which is the entrance at the end of the white lines where the students currently line up.

    • At 3:40 doors will be opened, and you will proceed to the cafeteria to pick up your child(ren). Everyone above the age of 2 years old must please wear a mask when entering the building.

    • Students will be seated at the tables as follows when entering the cafeteria: 01) Right side upon entering- 4th, 3rd, and Kindergarten, 02) Middle- 1st, and 03) Left side upon entering- 2nd

    • Please use the exits at the back of the cafeteria.  Proceed with caution upon exiting the blacktop or main parking lot.

    COVID-19 Testing
Just a reminder that Kellar will have periodic COVID-19 testing conducted at our school. 20% of students in the building will be administered a COVID-19 test every three weeks. This means your student will only be tested a couple times a semester. Kellar will notify parents/guardians that their student was COVID-19 tested that day. Please call the school if you have any questions or concerns.

This is Mrs. Baron with your weekly announcements.  Students and staff are getting back into the swing of routines and procedures with our first full week of school under our belt.  I do have some reminders that we still need to work on as a Kellar community.

    Masks
Please make sure that your child has a mask every morning when heading to school.  This is required for everyone’s safety.

    Pick-up and Drop Off Reminders

    • When dropping off or picking up your child, drive south on Mt. Hawley which will allow a right turn into Kellar’s parking lot.  This will prevent congestion and backup on Knoxville Ave.  The intersection of Mt. Hawley/Knoxville Ave. will be closed during these times.  Cars will be able to access Mt. Hawley off Giles Ln.
    • Do not pull in the first or second entrance to drive down by the entrance during arrival and dismissal times.  The front of the school parking lot is strictly to be used for loading and unloading buses during these times.
    • During after school pick up, please remain in your vehicle until 3:35. This will allow for all  of our students to arrive outside safely before parent pick-up takes place. Also, in the outer parking area, drive with the flow of traffic instead of trying to go against it.

Thank you to everyone for all your help and cooperation in these matters continuing to make Kellar safe for our students, staff, and families.

This is Mrs. Baron with your weekly announcements.  We are off to a fantastic start this school year! It was great seeing so many families attend both our Kindergarten Jump Start and Unpack Your Bookbag events!  This gave students a chance to check out their new classroom while meeting their teacher and dropping off their school supplies.  A huge thank you to everyone who attended and made it a huge success!

    PTO Meeting
Come join us this Tuesday evening for our first PTO Meeting of the new school year.  It begins at 6:00pm in the cafeteria.  All parents who attend will receive an opt out of uniform pass for their student to use the following school day, in addition free babysitting will be provided.

    Pick-up and Drop Off Reminders

Please do not park in the bus lane leaving your car unattended to come into the office.  You need to pull into a parking spot. This is especially important during arrival and dismissal times.  Also, you need to let your child's teacher know about transportation changes by 2:00 pm. If you do not hear back from the teacher, you will need to call the office by 3:00 pm for verification of the message being received.

If possible, please do not come from Knoxville, instead use Giles Ln. This will allow you to turn right into the parking lot.  Also, when exiting the parking lot, please turn right.  This will help with the flow of the traffic.

This is Mrs. Baron with your weekly announcements.  I am so excited that Wednesday will be our first official day of school! I am looking forward to having students back in the hallways and excited to learn! Teachers and staff have been working extremely hard getting Kellar in tip top shape to keep our students safe and ready to learn. Just a reminder that all people who enter the building, must be wearing a mask.

KINDERGARTEN JUMP START OPEN HOUSE & UNPACK YOUR BACKPACK

This coming Tuesday is a special day for our Kindergarten students from 11:00-1:00. Parents and Kindergarten students are invited to attend our Jump Start Open House.  Students can come see their classroom and meet their teacher, have a light lunch in the cafeteria, take a bus trip around the block, and even get a picture with the photo booth props.  Then in the evening, we will have Unpack your Backpack from 5:00-6:00.  All students and parents are invited to bring in their supplies while meeting their teachers and checking out their classrooms.

    BOO HOO YAHOO BREAKFAST

Just a reminder on the first day of school parents will need to say good-bye to their children outside and not walk their children into the classrooms.  Parents who are attending the Boo Hoo Yahoo Breakfast event will follow regular drop off procedure, but instead of circling around to exit, a staff member will direct you to park in the back of the playground/parking lot.  If you are not attending the event, you will follow the line of cars, drop your student off, and then exit the playground/parking lot area.

    DROP OFF AND PICKUP

If your child will be picked up from school (this does not include children who are walking or who go to latchkey) you will need a sign to display in your car window. Please email Mrs. Larson at nicole.larson@psd150.org for your sign.  Signs will be available for pick up on Tuesday, August 17th, from 11-1 or 5-6 in Room 113.  Please click here to review drop off and pickup procedures.

    SCHOOL HOURS

Kellar's regular school hours are 9:10-3:40 which is a change from the previous year.  Doors will open at 8:55 for our students.  I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

    Dear Kellar Families,

We are so excited to begin this new school year and can't wait to have your students return to our buildings for another year of learning. We also want to update you on the ways we plan to keep your student safe in our building this coming year during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

As was announced in July by the Superintendent, Peoria Public Schools will implement universal masking at all of our buildings this year. We encourage our families to make sure masks are part of their school supply list this year. We will also have masks available at our school in case a student forgets or loses one during the course of the day.

Since the vaccine is not available for our primary school age students, periodic COVID-19 testing will be conducting at our primary school buildings. Beginning Aug. 23rd, About 20%  of students in the building will be administered a COVID-19 test every three weeks. This means your student will only be tested a couple times a semester. Staff will notify parents/guardians that their student was COVID-19 tested that day.

Sanitation and cleaning procedures will be enacted at schools throughout the day to keep the building clean and safe.

Once again, we are so excited for the school year to begin next week. Thank you for your understanding and collaboration as we keeps our buildings safe this year!
