Peoria Public Schools is proposing the following starting/dismissal times as a way to align school starting times with research that indicates older students fare better with later start times -- and also to balance the transportation budget without minimizing services to students and families.
Calvin Coolidge Middle School and Whittier School are the host schools for Peoria Public Schools' February Parent University event at the RiverPlex Recreation and Wellness Center (600 Northeast Water Street, Peoria, IL 61603). The theme for the Thursday, February 16th (5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) will be "Fitness and Wellness. RSVPs are required for each family that wishes to attend. Whittier started a new initiative the second semester in the cafeteria to improve the noise level of the student conversations. Each classroom has received a ten-frame that hangs next to their table and is attempting to earn points by talking at an appropriate level. Each class can earn incentives for their classroom by filling their ten-frame. After two weeks all classes were able to complete their ten-frame.
Whittier Primary School started a new tradition on Monday January 23. The first weekly assembly began bringing the students together to celebrate student and teacher successes. Over 60 students and teachers were recognized during our first assembly and look forward to celebrating more student successes every Monday. During the week of January 9-13, Peoria Public Schools issues a challenge for all students to read as many books as possible and take AR tests. After the week, Whittier Primary finished in first place ahead of all primary schools. Katsumi Engel finished in 4th place, and Isabel Lynn finished in 5th place in the individual student competition.
On Friday November 4, Bradley Engineering students visited the 3rd and 4th grade students and performed experiments. The students performed an acid/base experiment; painted with Phenolphthalein solution, which is a colorless indicator until it reacts with a base; performed a Wint-O-Green Life Saver experiment; and had a short presentation on the different types of engineering careers.
It is our goal to see every student in every class, everyday! Help us meet our school attendance goal.
