A Look Back into Sterling's History

In March of 1962, ground was broken on Sterling Avenue for District 150's twenty-fifth elementary school. Sterling was originally opened as a K-8th grade elementary school in 1963. Since that time, Sterling has had four additions.

The hearing impaired school was added in 1972 to serve Peoria and the 13 surrounding counties. A third addition was added in 1986 when the district moved from traditional elementary schools to elementary K-4 and middle school 5-8.

A fourth addition was added in 1991 to create four new classrooms--the fifth grade wing. In addition to our middle school classes for fifth through eighth grades, we have a separate unit for hearing impaired students and early childhood special needs students.
