Charter Oak Primary School hosted a Holiday Sing-Along concert to celebrate the beginning of winter break. Students sang and danced to such classics as Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree and Let It Snow. Students and staff wore red and green and some students made holiday hats for the concert.
Students received one free book from the ladies of the Look It's My Book program. Students picked out an interesting story from grade-level choices to read and take home. The ladies help students decide between the many exciting options and hand each student a bookmark when they've made their decision. Students at Charter Oak are so grateful to bring these books home and share with their families about what they read!
Introducing the idea of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to students was fun using a warm up project! Students in first grade split into teams to use the engineering process to build a structure that would hold at least one book up. Students planned, tested, redesigned, and built with their group to complete the task. Some realized the difficulties of working in a group, while others were challenged by the timing of their process. All of them LOVED how their structure was successful at the end. Classes are eagerly awaiting their next STEM based task while exploring manipulatives and activities rooted in science standards.
