Two Richwoods High School student groups are hosting a Syrian Refugee Benefit Event, Wednesday, March 15, 6 – 8 p.m. in the Terrazzo at Richwoods High School, 6301 N. University. The Muslim Student Association (MSA) and the Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) are teaming up to present a program featuring Syrian and Middle Eastern music, Middle Eastern food, a henna booth and booths providing information on the Syrian refugee crisis and relief organizations. A speaker from the Islamic Center of Peoria will keynote the event.
Peoria Public Schools is proposing the following starting/dismissal times as a way to align school starting times with research that indicates older students fare better with later start times -- and also to balance the transportation budget without minimizing services to students and families.
Students in the Minority Academic Advancement Project (MAAP) conceived, wrote and produced the 2017 Richwoods High School Black History Month assembly which was presented on Friday, February 24. The assembly included a theatrical performance, spoken word and dance performances and a keynote address by Dr. Rita Ali, Vice President of Diversity, International, and Adult Education at Illinois Central College.
Richwoods High School football players Cameron Bland, Josiah Neal, Cody Wright, Keenan Streitmatter and Sharod Danage spent part of the day teaching Northmoor Primary School students fundamentals of football. Northmoor students who met PBIS goals practiced throwing passes, kicking and running with their new high school friends. RHS Soccer players participated in a similar PBIS day at Northmoor in the fall and in May members of the RHS basketball team will visit.
Richwoods High School senior Ravie Boungou was one of three Peoria Public School female high school students named Annie’s Girls, an award established by Illinois State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth in honor of her mother, Annie Jo Gordon. The Annie’s Girls Award recognizes female high school students who show exemplary commitment to their communities through service. Entrants submitted a letter of recommendation and an essay discussing their community service activities and describing a woman who had served as a role model for community service in their life.
Calvin Coolidge Middle School and Whittier School are the host schools for Peoria Public Schools' February Parent University event at the RiverPlex Recreation and Wellness Center (600 Northeast Water Street, Peoria, IL 61603). The theme for the Thursday, February 16th (5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) will be "Fitness and Wellness. RSVPs are required for each family that wishes to attend.
